I've had a few different Giannini seven-strings. I boughtbr /them because I wanted to familiarize myself with playingbr /7-string because I am a guitar builder and I wanted tobr /understand the design issues involved.br /br /These are not particularly refined guitars. The finish isbr /put on too thick, choking the acoustic sound. The finishbr /of the frets is not great either, though as a builder Ibr /tuned-up the guitar and tweaked-it with an hour or so ofbr /work. The frets were level enough but they were not wellbr /crowned so I had to correct that and polish them with 400-gritbr /wet/dry paper. That's good enough.br /br /The guitar is not all that thrilling acoustically but whenbr /plugged-in it packs a powerful bottom-end wallop! br /br /People would be looking around wondering where the bass playerbr /was. I used this guitar in ensemble settings and mostly br /played lively bass lines on it. I used a thumb pick becausebr /the thick strings would wear-down my thumbnail fast... andbr /I have very thick and tough nails. br /br /The guitar was well-enough made that it accepted a "transparent"br /setup with very acceptable sound quality. In other words,br /I dropped the action down real low and the guitar still soundedbr /okay. br /br /The fretboard is wide and fairly flat. If you have small handsbr /you'll struggle with it. I have medium-large hands with a goodbr /reach and disciplined classical fingering habits, so I adaptedbr /pretty quick to the fingerboard. The neck is wide, thickbr /and too thick for my taste. I would prefer a flat-backed neckbr /with less depth, which is an eccentric preference and not thebr /sort of neck you'll be familiar with unless you know guitarbr /builders - it's not the sort of design the mass-market of playersbr /would like.. I'm ok with the width of the neck.br /br /The guitar has a truss-rod in the neck. It's a heavy guitarbr /and the weight is balanced. The neck and peghead have a lotbr /more mass than a six-string classic, but the build of thebr /soundbox is heavy too.br /br /Not especially responsive. Not a big problem in the feedbackbr /department either. br /br /Overall very acceptable for performing but not a refinedbr /instrument for a discerning player.
